Abstract
Wavelets provide a convenient mechanism for encoding image data and transmitting it progressively. This is useful in many applications such as Geographic Information Systems, in which users interactively obtain images from a central server. By sorting the coefficients in decreasing order of magnitude, further gains may be realized in that the important features of the image may be transmitted sooner rather than later.
