I will briefly describe the software behind Jose, the Robot Partner's 2001 AAAI award winning robot waiter. Jose is driven by a behavior-based software control architecture. He is capable of safely navigating dynamic environments; locating people in his immediate environment by detecting skin tone in color images; interacting with people through speech recognition and synthesis as well as facial expressions; monitoring the amount of food left in his serving tray and finally finding his home base to within a few centimeters using visual landmarks. Jose is the most advanced vision-based robot in the world today! A demo of Jose in action will follow at the end of talk.
