February 28, 2007 Deploying Ubiquitous Computing System, Adrian Friday
Ubiquitous Computing inherently involves the deployment of systems 'outside the lab' in challenging settings and on a scale difficult to resource in academic environments. Without such deployments however, researchers cannot hope to address the real world concerns endemic in moving beyond research testbeds and prototypes and toward truly Ubiquitous Computing. In this talk we focus on the latest of a series of deployment led projects at Lancaster - the e-Campus - an ambitious project that aims to create a 'grid of general purpose interactive public displays' in public spaces around the University Campus. 18 months and several deployments later, this talk both reports on the experiences and exciting opportunities afforded by e-Campus, but also reflects on the lessons so far and provides guidelines for those seeking to undertake Ubiquitous Computing deployments.
