< < | Installation of SuSE Packages
Date Opened: Feb 14, 2012
Impact: 2 = inconvenience
Contact Person: Robert, Brad
Issue: If a user would like to install a package that is on the list of SuSE supported packages but not included in the default install, could the user send an email to help desk to get the package installed?
Updates:
- Mar 13: Packages cannot be installed until they have been verified not to conflict with other installed packages (some packages may conflict, despite being be on the list of SuSE supported packages). This can take a few days depending on Hazita's schedule. If faster response is desired, recommended procedure is to install new packages under evaluation on a user-administered machine on subnet 54. If any of these package meet user requirements, they can then send email to help to have them installed globally. Once new packages are installed this way, they will become part of the default department OS image.
- Feb 14: Tech staff may have declined installation of some SuSE packages to make it easier to track what is installed on each machine. But, if the user can request their desired packages after each re-install, then we don't need to worry about tracking what's on each machine.

Issue: What is the best way to share large files with other universities?
Updates: |
|
> > |
- Mar 27: Can we have a separate partition from imager-raid and psm-raid so that we can automatically delete files within the new partition? Will the cluster be able to access this new space?
- Mar 27: The imager-raid and psm-raid space is on a 7310 filesystem. The cost to increase this space by a minimum of 2TB is $1/GB (so $2000 for 2TB).
|
|
- Feb 21: Can Imager buy raid space (min 2TB) dedicated for file transfer? Glen will ask Mike if we can add to existing raid space or buy new raid space. Glen will get price quote. Files in space should auto-delete in x weeks.
- Feb 21: Mike does not want to use FTP server.
- Feb 14: What if the dept got a 3TB FTP server? Files would be automatically deleted in 3 days. Anyone can access files. Files can be encrypted.

Issue: If you have processes that read/write a lot that you want to run on the cluster, what's the best way to run these processes?

- Mar 27: Glen will contact Anika instead of Hagit.
|
|
- Feb 21: Glen will contact Hagit about using new space that's better for I/O ops (Sun Storage 7310).
- Feb 21: Cluster moved to isolated LAN. Need to ssh into remote.cs. Looks like cluster will not be upgraded to 12.1 with rest of machines.
- Feb 14: PiCloud too expensive.
