Lab Orientation Details 2005
Description
This year's lab orientations will be divided into two components:
1 All lab open house during first week orientation
Date: Tuesday, Sept. 6
Time: 2 pm - ~5 pm (note: BBQ in the Dempster lane will start at ~5 pm)
Description: Labs will be open for new grads (and others) to meet & mingle with other computer science students, faculty, and
staff in the lab environments. The hope is that new grads. will mingle freely in and out of various labs. This is intended to be much more informal than in previous years (i.e., no talks, ppt, etc.) -- but these might be good inclusions for the individual lab sessions planned for the Fall (
see below).
Our dept. occupies space in two buildings located at 2366 Main Mall. Both buildings are called
ICICS/CS.

2 Individual lab sessions
A series of weekly open sessions from Oct. 2005 - Dec. 2005. The goal is to have each lab organize a ~2 hour open session where current students, faculty, and staff of the particular lab can demo & chat about their research with other students, faculty, and staff. Each lab will choose a lead person to organize the orientation for their lab (
see calendar).
Calendar for Individual Lab Sessions
Instructions
- Each lab is requested to find a lead person to organize a lab orientation.
- This lab lead is responsible for updating this wiki with details of the lab's orientation plans, and co-ordinating high-level details with either Jordan (talis at cs ubc ca) or Colin (swindell at cs ubc ca). For example, the lab lead should ensure demos are arranged, date & time choices work for a majority of the lab, etc. For larger labs, it might be helpful to have 1 lead person and a few other students responsible for various sub-tasks.
- Details for each orientation should be filled out in the Research Areas section.

1) Dates
For the upcoming Imager Lab dept. demo for the new CS grad. students (and others
in the dept.), please e-mail me <swindell@cs.ubc.ca> by Sept. 29 with which dates work
best for you. They are all on Tuesdays from 12 - 2 because this has been a common slot
scheduled by the dept. to ensure the fewest class conflicts.
Tuesday, Oct. 11; 12 pm - 2 pm
Tuesday, Oct. 18; 12 pm - 2 pm
Tuesday, Oct. 25; 12 pm - 2 pm
2) Format
The proposed format is similar to prev. years:
a) Each faculty member gives a 5 min overview of their research and their grad. students
in X736.
b) Start freeform demo sessions in
- Imager Lab
- MUX
- Human Measuring Studio
- Physical Simulation & Measurement Lab
- Other places?
Extra notes:
- Brown bag session? I assume we do not need to worry about providing food & refreshments?
- Have maps and signage in each lab; with a list of demos & people.
- Is there a way to get security to disable the door alarms for the session? Does anyone have little magnets to override the sensors?
- Have a data projector for the short talks?
- Dan has offered to arrange demos and the actual day's events.
- Current planning info. will be updated here
