Here are some helpful tips for new members to the SPL.

  • The lab web page is at http://www.cs.ubc.ca/labs/spl/
  • Add yourself to the SPL mailing list: mail majordomo@csDELETEthisTEXT.ubc.ca placing "subscribe soft-practices" in the body of the message)
  • Update your userinfo information. Department people will use this to find out your office, etc. You can query this information with the userinfo command from any Unix box or using the userinfo web search.
  • Get yourself on the Unix spl group by asking one of the faculty to send a request to help@csDELETEthisTEXT.ubc.ca.
  • Read the local computing FAQ for information on setting up your e-mail, and about our Unix and Windows setups.
    • Your home directory is accessed through Z:\ under Windows.
    • Our SPL directory is in /cs/labs/spl (Unix) or R:\spl (Windows)
    • The different internal groups have their own drives for storing research work, usually found under the SPL directory. Gail's group (for historical reasons) is found at /isd/se2/ (Unix) or R:\isd\se2.
    • Local copies of programs can be found from the SPL downloads page; add your own to /cs/spl/labs/Downloads (Unix) or R:\spl\shared\Downloads (Windows); the web-page is rebuilt nightly.
  • Use the self-service forms at Campus Wide Login for your cwl id.
    • If possible, make your cwl id the same as your cs id.
      • Then inform help@cs of your cwl id.
    • Doing this will allow you to connect via the Contivity VPN client on Windows, logging in as your cwl id.cs
      • you'll get an IP address inside the CS firewall,
      • you'll be able to mount your home directory from \\cs-smb.cs.ubc.ca\your cs id,
      • and connect to printers at \\winprint.cs.ubc.ca\queue name (eg. iccs-306).
