Who I am:
I am a Professor at
the Computer Science Department
of the
University of British Columbia (UBC) in
Vancouver, BC (Canada).
Vancouver is a beautiful city and a great place to live
(for a nice real-time view of English Bay, click
here).
I am also a member of the
Institute for Computational Intelligence and Cognitive Systems
(ICICS)
and a Faculty Associate
of the
Peter-Wall Institute for Advanced Studies,
where I was a Distinguished Scholar in Residence April 2010 - March 2011.
At the computer science department, I am a founding member
of the
Bioinformatics, Theoretical and Empirical Algorithms (BETA) Laboratory
and a member of the
Laboratory for Computational Intelligence (LCI).
Before starting as a faculty member at UBC in 2000,
I was a postdoctoral fellow at the UBC Computer Science Department.
Prior to that, I studied Computing Science, Mathematics and
Molecular Biology at the
Darmstadt University of Technology in
Darmstadt, Germany. After finishing my
Master's degree (Hauptdiplom) in 1996, I became a member
of the Intellectics group of Wolfgang Bibel, where I worked as an Academic
Assistant and finished my Ph.D. (Dr.rer.nat) in Computer Science
in 1998. I have also been member of the
Automata Theory and Formal Languages Group of Hermann K.-G. Walter,
where I established and lead the
SALIERI Computer Music Project.
My academic interests
are focussed on topics in Algorithmics,
Computational Intelligence, Bioinformatics
and Computer Music.
