Boston July 2006 (UAI/AAAI)

Two intense conferences, and the first workshop I cochaired! These pictures are all from AFTER the conferences though - I had 3 more days as a tourist :-) Botson is very interesting - quite different than I expected but very nice for tourists !

Loose cables in the subway - I don't have pictures, but the coaches are quite outdated ... 80s or 90s in Germany ... Read closely ... so at least this sign is from before 1990 ... The World Trade Center, venue of AAAI

skyline from the South more skyline from the South The Seaport Hotel, conference hotel for AAAI

Darn, don't remember what this was ... even more skyline from the South for some reasons cops still regulate the traffic ...

somewhat out of sync with the lights yep, there are cool modern buildings in Boston ! chill on the boats or dive into city life ...

Very pretty crab place I have no clue why they have those poles in the water ... Red bricks abound in Boston!

Touching the clouds And next to it an old place on wooden stilts old and new

only new security cameras ... Yeah, soo many building sites !!

Note that this is in the heart of downtown ! But is there anyone working to make the site disappear at some point ? Doesn't look like ... Just another building site - there's dozens of those, and I've never seen anyone work on them ... Insider

yeah, at the time I thought those skycrapers are pretty close together but this here was more like the standard distance maybe three meters

and in between is actually a street ! this is my favourite ... "oh, there is a house where we wanted to build ... so let's just build over it" while those skycraper pics are from the business district where hardly any people are on the street, there are nicer areas

one of the many (!) cows in town, set up by artists and to be auctioned off after the summer, giving the proceeds to cancer research don't know what that architect was thinking ;-) wow, nice! outdoor fire ladders, I've only seen those in old movies :-)

this is about as close as it gets less than a meter The Courthouse

City hall Garbage - why is it that US American cities have so much of this on the street ?? And not only in bad areas ... doesn't this picture suggest something is going wrong ??

Lots of history in Boston - here a memorial for the parents of Benjamin Franklin Grave of Samuel Adams By Faneuil Hall

Quincy Market Funny street performer He was actually pretty good !

His assistant Did some pretty nice action on that bike - here's a video That doesn't look easy ... video of the handstand video of hime waiting for the 3rd club ("Amber, throw the fucking club") video of him juggling

Random birds Again The computer science building at MIT !!

Doesn't it look awesome ? It's one of two really cool buildings at MIT ... I think this was Paul Revere By Trinity church - out of the trolley. I really should've stopped here ...

More nice modern architecture The first German restaurant of Boston Completely made out of recycled material !

Aquarium A jellyfish in the sea On board of the USS Constituion, build in 1791. The oldest commissioned Warship in the world, which is still afloat

But all this stuff obviously isn't original Our tour guide, a young marine "Don't tread on me", adapted from the revolutionary flag

A WWII destroyer Yeah, let the kids play ... On the one hand everything in me says this is wrong. But kids love things like that ...

Some facts It was pretty impressive ! On the freedom trail

statues like this everywhere ... DSCN2136 ... and then the rain came ! Strong and wild. Man, it was pouring ... I don't think Boston is used to that ! Here a little stream down some steps

Lots of water ... too much for the canalization ... video of cars in the rain But it stopped quickly. Here's Paul Revere DSCN2142

Little Italy in the Northern part of Boston. Awesome ! At least 5 blocks completely in Italian hands. Over 100 Italian restaurants ! A propos "too much for the canalization" ;-) This is 4 hours after the rain at MIT - 3 cm of water left. The typical empty construction sites with the (during my visit) somewhat typical puddles of water in front of it

DSCN2154 The other really cool building at MIT. Just opposite my dorm Fire station on Harvard grounds. Harvard requested that it be built in accordance with the Harvard architectural style

Inside the church-like looking building in which all freshmen eat their dinner.
