Rules of conduct regarding assignments
We encourage collaborations in various ways throughout the course. Here are rules
regarding collaborations for assignments:
- (1) You may work on assignments alone or in groups of two, and we encourage you to work in groups of two. You may change partners
between assignments, but for any one assignment you may only be part of one group, not more. Groups are described below.
- (2) Your group must spend at least 30 minutes working on each problem independently before collaborating with other current students of CPSC 320.
These collaborations between groups are limited to discussion and brainstorming only, i.e. no record of any sort (written or electronic)
may be exchanged or leave the brainstorming session.
- (3) Each group must write up their own solution independently, clearly stating the group's members on the title page, using their own words to prove that
they understand the problem on their own.
- (4) In your write-up you have to acknowledge all sources of assistance. Valid sources are limited to CPSC 320 current course staff (e.g. instructor, TAs),
course handouts, and course textbooks if you quote or adapt from them.
- (5) Groups: must submit only one joint solution to the assignment and will receive one grade for the assignment that applies to every group member.
- (6) Members of one group should collaborate rather than, for example, work on individual parts of the assignment and stitch the result together.
Any other approach is likely to lead to serious problems in the exams.
Violations of these rules constitute very serious academic misconduct, and they are
subject to penalties ranging from a grade of zero on a particular assignment to
indefinite suspension from the University. More information on procedures and
penalties can be found in the Department's Policy on Plagiarism and collaboration and
in the University Calendar. If you are in any doubt about the interpretation of any of
these rules, consult your instructor and also see more information here.
