Digitizing KidsAction Coaching: A Web App to Support Home-Based Physical Activity for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
Developed by UBC researchers in close collaboration with Special Olympics BC (SOBC), KidsAction has been used in physical activity programs run by SOBC and the Sun Peaks Adapted Ski Program, and will be adopted (and adapted) by additional community-based organizations in the near future. The approach brings together coaches, parents and children in a collaborative goal-setting process.
Our objective as a design team was to develop a web-based application to support the KidsAction program. We conducted qualitative research by interviewing KidsAction researchers, coaches and parents, and analyzed existing program documentation to help us define requirements for the app. Following this, we brainstormed and prototyped solutions, which we validated with target users via usability testing and feedback sessions.
This research was presented in 2021 Digital Health Week Poster Competition organized by Women’s Health Research Institute and the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute.
