Homework 1 due Wednesday
Check the schedule for list of papers and class schedule (see links on the bottom of each page for this class to get to the schedule)
The course introduces students to many aspects of data management system design research, including traditional database systems. This will not be a repeat of an undergraduate course; the focus will be on research rather than either using databases or how a database system works.
The bulk of the class will involve reading research papers, presenting them, and discussing and analyzing them in the context of the whole class. There will be at least one (and possibly more) assigment given to ensure that you understand core concepts in practice as well as theory. In addition, there will be a project. There will be no midterms or finals.
Prerequisites: Students having graduate standing in CS or the Masters of Software Systems are welcome to attend, regardless of whether you have a database background or not (I'll cover a few basics in the first week). If you are an undergraduate who has taken a database class and are interested in attending, feel free to send me e-mail to discuss it.
