XML
For today's class, we will be reading two papers:
- Shanmugasundaram, J., Tufte, K., He, G., Zhang, C., DeWitt,
D., Naughton, J.: Relational databases for querying XML documents:
Limitations and Opportunities. In: Proceedings of VLDB,
pp. 302314 (1999) We're reading this paper because it describes some
of the issues when trying to query XML from a relational database.
Skip sections 4 and 5.
- Michael Stonebraker Joseph M. Hellerstein: What Goes Around Comes
Around. Readings in Database Systems, Fourth Edition Morgan Kaufmann
2005. It gives an interesting perspective on the various data models
that we've discussed for the last little bit.
For those interested in what are the issues in storing in a native XML
database, I recommend the following optional paper:
Fiebig, T., Helmer, S., Kanne, C.-C., Moerkotte, G., Neumann, J.,
Schiele, R., Westmann, T.: Anatomy of a native XML base management
system. The VLDB Journal 11(4), 292314 (2002)
