For today's class, we will be reading two papers:
- David DeWitt, Shahram Ghandeharizadeh, Donovan Schcheider, Allan Bricker,
Hui-i Hsiao, and Rick Rasmussen The
Gamma Database Machine Project. TKDE 2(1), March
1990. 44-62. May require being on the UBC VPN We are reading this paper
because it is both an interesting concept by itself and also provides a good
contrast to No SQL. You can skip sections 5 and 6.
- J. Dean et al. MapReduce: simplified data processing on large
clusters OSDI 2004.
We are reading this paper
because it's a good description of Map Reduce.
Successfully reading this paper requires no special strategies.
