Transaction Processing

For today's class, I'm trying an experiment. You can pick one of two papers about ARIES, which is a good example of a transaction processing method that most modern transaction processing methods are based upon. There are two options:

Option 1: C. Mohan Donald J. Haderle Bruce G. Lindsay Hamid Pirahesh Peter M. Schwarz. ARIES: A Transaction Recovery Method Supporting Fine-Granularity Locking and Partial Rollbacks Using Write-Ahead Logging. ACM Trans. Database Syst., 17(1), 1992, 94-162.
This is the full version of the basic algorithm. It is comprehensive. It is a great paper. It is very long, causing many students to hate it, which is why I'm experimenting with an alternative this time. A few hints on reading the full version of this paper:
- In section 1.2, don't worry about any of the locks other than S and X (e.g., don't worry about IX, IS, or SIX locks). Also don't worry about the differences between latches and locks.
- there are definitions in section 4.1 that may help with understanding section 3.
- Ignore all of the "code" (e.g., Figure 10) unless it helps you.
- Skip sections 5.3, 6.4, 8, 9, 10.2, 10.3, and 11
Option 2: Kurt Rothermel, C. Mohan: ARIES/NT: A Recovery Method Based on Write-Ahead Logging for Nested Transactions. VLDB. 1989. 337-346
This paper is shorter than the full version. It concentrates on nested transactions. We don't really care about all of the details about nesting, but it's one heck of a lot shorter than the full ARIES paper. There are no special hints for reading this paper, other than ignore the discussions about nested transactions, since I don't care about them. So ignore sections 2.1 and anything in section 3 that goes into depth on the nested aspects.
