Model Management Introduction
In this class we will be discussing the key ideas of model
management, a system for metadata management that was pioneered by my
former advisor, Phil Bernstein. There
are two readings: - Philip A. Bernstein,
Alon Y. Halevy, Rachel Pottinger: A Vision of Management of Complex
Models. SIGMOD Record 29(4): 55-63 (2000). We're reading this
paper because it gives us a good idea about some of the applications
that have metadata problems and because it provides good motivation
for a metadata management system.
- Philip A. Bernstein:
Applying Model Management
to Classical Meta Data Problems. CIDR 2003. We're reading this
paper because it provides a more in-depth understanding of the kinds of
problems that we run across when trying to create a metadata
management system.
To successfully complete this reading, be ready to write a good
response and be prepared for a good in class discussion, I suggest the
following strategy:
- Read the first paper in its entirety. This paper should be fairly
easy to comprehend, and will be very general. The paper was written
right at the beginning of the research
- The second paper was written several years later and is much more
detail oriented about all of the operators and usage scenarios than
the previous paper. Read the second paper in the following fashion:
- Read sections 1 and 2 closely
- Skim section 3, if you get bored, skip to section 4
- Read sections 4 through the end. If you get confused, refer back
to section 3
