Abstract
The word “zen” is often used as a synonym for the state of peacefulness in modern English. However, did you know that the original meaning of zen is actually a school of Buddhism that strongly emphasizes meditation? Meditation is so central to zen to the point where zen practice literally means meditation. And ironically, zen advises people not to seek states of peacefulness when doing the practice. Many people have unrealistic expectations of what zen practice is capable of. Some think it makes no difference while others think it makes problems disappear. Zen practice won’t necessarily get rid of your problems. But, it can change how you view them and relate to them. Like a beautiful lotus that grows and blooms in the midst of filthy mud, you will grow to flourish in the midst of life’s problems upon sincerely practicing zen. Join me at the talk to learn more!
