A Presenter Queue has been set up to help grads and postdocs to take turns and present/lead discussion during the bi-weekly MUX meetings. Please feel free to arrange your place (but not specifically reorder others) in the queue. The 2 persons at the top of the queue are first in line to present/prepare a discussion (at the next meeting). If you want to present/lead a discussion at a particular MUX meeting, email the czar and she/he'll slot you in. If you don't care about when to slotted in, keep your name in the queue. After it was your turn you will be moved to the end of the queue again.

Please keep track of the list in order to estimate when your turn will be. There also will be a general weekly reminders on the mux-lab mailing list, announcing the speakers/discussion leaders of this and the next week. However, keep in mind that there will be NO personal reminder. If you are for any reason not able to present at your assigned slot, it is your responsibility to find a person who can takes over your slot and email the czar.

If possible, presenters should make an effort to bring some snacks in for the group.

What to do in your slot

You can choose from 4 options of what to do with "your" 25 minutes slot. These are:

  1. Research Update talks and discussion: 10-15 minutes talk about your research + 10-15min discussion (for more guidance on the format of the talk see below)
  2. Pick a research paper to discuss: You pick a paper that folks read before the meeting and then we will have a discussion introduces and led by you (a brief summary of the paper at the beginning is usually a good idea). Note that your are supposed to send out a link to the paper the Monday before the meeting (10am).
  3. Talk + background reading: Mixes 1 and 2 ... You give a brief talk (~10 min) about some ideas of yours and also you provide a list of papers. From that list everyone picks just one paper and reads it upfront so we can have a more diverse discussion. Note that your are supposed to send out (a) a list of the papers plus links to them, and (b) a brief description of your ideas you want to talk about the Monday before the meeting (10am).
  4. Special topic talk + discussion: You also can pick a special topic beyond your research focus that interests you (e.g. ethics, task management, literature organization tools, etc.) prepare a talk communicating your ideas and thoughts (~10 min) and leading the following discussion. Please make sure that you send out a brief summary of what you will talk about the Monday before the meeting.

General note: for all communication please use the mux-lab list.

Presentation Guidelines

Please keep in mind the three following aspects when preparing and giving a presentation:

  • The presentations are meant to be informal, e.g., can be at any stage of your project for a research talk! It is NOT necessary to have a polished conference talk.

  • Each presenter gets a strict 25 minutes time slot to present and discuss her/his work/ideas/etc. This makes it fairer for the 2nd presenter and gives us a little bit of time to discuss general things at the end of each meeting.

  • The pure-talk time is restricted to 15 minutes, giving us at least 10 minutes for discussing your work. If the talk is longer than 15 minutes, the talk will be stopped. If you doing sth. more interactive going forth and back between discussion and presentation, you get the entire 20 minutes for this of course...

CHI Title/Abstract review session tips

Here is an efficient process which generated great feedback in 10min/paper:

1) assign a time keeper who gives a 1-min warning

2) start with abstract, then go on to the title in last 1-2 minutes once we understand what the paper’s about

3) focus discussion on items such as:

  • Comprehensibility
  • Relevance to CHI
  • Clear contribution (type)
  • Do you want to read this paper?
  • Reviewer selection

Master thesis presentation

If you want to present/defend your Master thesis in a MUX meeting you can do that and will get an entire slot (i.e. 50 minutes) for that, split in 30 min talk and 20 min discussion. Keep in mind that if the talk is longer than 30 minutes, the talk will be stopped!
