Math 200, Winter 2015 Term 1, Common Page
This page concerns all Fall 2015 Sections of Math 200 (Winter 2015, Term 1)
Recent News |
Here is a
formula sheet that will be provided with
the final exam; here is the
list of topics covered in the final exam.
Here are some
suggested problems from the textbook
in addition to the required homework and the optional (skill building)
Webwork problems.
|
Textbook |
Multivariable Calculus, by James Stewart, 7th Edition, covering
Chapters 12, 14, and 15, and Section 10.5 (needed for 12.6) and
Section 10.3 (needed for 15.8 and 15.9).
Some supplemental handouts may be given for material not covered in
the textbook or covered differently.
Earlier editions of Stewart's textbook will be similar in content
to the 7th Edition, (1) although chapters, sections, and problems
differ in numbering,
and (2) some material will differ.
If you use an earlier edition then
you are responsible for cross checking the numbering and making sure that
there is nothing missing in the material from your edition.
Here are some
suggested problems from the textbook.

Past Exams |
-
Many recent Math 200 final exams are available on the
UBC Math Past Exams
webpage.
-
Here are "final exam summaries" for some of the above exams:
2013WT2 (Winter 2013, Term 2),
2013WT1.
Some sections will have homework problems that
require you to produce a similar summary
for (parts of) other past exams.
-
The UBC Math Wiki
Math Exam Resources
website currently contains two previous Math 200 final exams, hints, and
solutions (namely Winter 2011, Terms 1 and 2).
|
Drop-In |
UBC Math has a
Math
Learning Centre for Drop-in, available to students in any section
during certain hours.
|
Exams and Grades |
Your grade will be computed as 10% homework, 20% for each of two
mideterms, and 50% final exam.
Each section will have its own homework,
and its own midterms, to be determined
by the section's instructor.
Grades across sections may be scaled to ensure fairness.
Your instructor may provide a formula sheet with an exam, which
will be posted before the exam; otherwise you are not allowed any
other notes, books, calculators, other computing devices, etc.
Students are required to bring your ID to all exams.
Homework will be assigned weekly, and will involve
both WebWork (done online) and written problems (you must submit
a hardcopy during class time); your lowest three homework scores will
be dropped from the overall homework score.
|
Final Exam |
The final exam will be common to all sections.
It will look a lot like the Math 200
UBC Math Past Exams.
A short list of formulas may
be provided with the final exam; if so, it will look similar to
the two page formula list provided with
the
2013WT2
final exam;
you will be responsible for understanding what these formulas mean.
|
Midterms |
Midterms will be given during your section's class hours,
but the room may be different.
Each midterm will be 45 minutes long.
You will have assigned seats (likely by
alphabetical order of last name);
please stay outside the exam room until you
are called in.
Each instructor will determine the precise material examinable on each
midterms; you must take the midterm of the section in which
you are registered.
|
Missed Midterms |
Our missed midterm policy is based on that of deferred final
exams at UBC:
if you miss a midterm your score will be 0 unless it is missed for a
reason accepted for missing a final exam
(e.g., medical condition, religious observance, extreme personal distress);
you must supply the relevant documentation in a timely fashion.
If you properly document one missed midterm your score will be taken
to be 50% of the other midterm and 50% of the final, both after any
applicable scaling;
for two missed midterms your score for both will come entirely from
the final exam.
|
Schedule |
All sections will roughly follow this schedule:
-
Unit 1:
Chapter 12 and 10.5 (10.5 is needed for 12.6): Weeks 1-3 (i.e., 9/9-9/25);
-
Unit 2: Chapter 14, omitting 14.2: Weeks 4-8 (i.e., 9/28-10/30);

(i.e., 11/2-12/4).
Units 2 and 3 are each
scheduled for five weeks since during these units there will be
