In the 2008 Federal Election, the Conservative Party formed the government with under 38% of the vote. The current electoral system gives us a government that most of us don't want. There are however, two things that we can do about it: change the electoral system, and in the meantime, use the properties of the current electoral system to our advantage (i.e., vote strategically).

Voting strategically is not difficult. If you don't do it, your vote will be wasted. If we do it, we can change the way governments work. We keep being told we should vote for the party we like the most, but that turns out to give us the government we don't want. It leads to vote splitting. There is an alternative:

  • Tell polling companies the party you like the most. (Don't tell them you will be voting strategically, as we will use the information from polling to tell us what the best strategy is).
  • Vote for whichever of the top two candidates in your riding you like the best. Every other vote is wasted! The only problem is determining which are the top two candidates, but that is what the polling does. When an election is close, we will keep you abreast of sites that analyze the polls and recommend how to vote strategically.

That is all there is to voting strategically. It is not difficult.
