What is the Masters of Digital Media (MDM) Program?

The Masters of Digital Media (MDM) Program is an innovative, full-time professional Master’s degree in entertainment technology and digital media that welcomed its first class in September 2007. With input from academia and industry, the MDM Program's challenging curriculum is uniquely designed to transition students from diverse backgrounds into new and expanding digital media markets and opportunities. During the 12-month program and 4-month internship, graduates develop the professional skills required to be effective creators, practitioners and senior managers in the digital media industry.

How is the MDM different from other Masters Programs?

The MDM is a highly applied degree. It is non-thesis based and is appropriate for students who seek to enter the digital media industry. 98% of student workload is team-based with a focus on perfecting the process of executing a digital media project. The MDM’s core components involve working with real-life clients for 14-week production cycles each semester.

What types of jobs have MDM graduates acquired?

MDM graduates work in many industries: games, advertising, e-learning, social media, online marketing, animation, etc. Positions currently held by MDM grads include but are not limited to: Producer, Associate Producer, Senior Developer, Lead Designer, Creative Director, Digital Production Administrator, Digital Project Manager.

Additionally, a significant percentage of MDM graduates have started their own companies with immense support from the Centre for Digital Media.

What types of students does the MDM program look for?

The MDM program accepts candidates from all disciplines. The majority of students hold undergraduate degrees in the Visual Arts, Computer Science, Visual Communication Design, Software Engineering, New Media and Theatre. A variety come from Business Administration, Architecture, Broadcasting and Cognitive Sciences.

Do I need to have both artistic, design AND technical skills to apply?

No. Because the MDM program is interdisciplinary, the work between students is divided based on the skills that each student contributes. For example, a computer scientist will do the programming component of the project, while the artist will do the art work, and so on.

Does the MDM offer scholarships?

Yes. Approximately 30% of current MDM students received scholarships in the last admission cycle. In addition, the Centre for Digital Media plans to increase its scholarship funding to almost double the amount from the previous year.

Important News: The MDM program located in Vancouver, British Columbia recently completed the construction of its brand-new facility, which opened in September 2012: https://thecdm.ca/about
