Welcome to the start of a new academic year
Whether you are returning to UBC Computer Science, or joining us for the very first time, WELCOME!
On Tuesday, September 5, join thousands of UBC students and hundreds of volunteers for Imagine UBC, the orientation event that celebrates the start of the academic year. For most students, Imagine UBC replaces the first day of classes. By early September, you’ll receive an email with an Imagine UBC schedule, and be invited to attend a variety of events throughout the day.
We also invite all undergraduates to attend our Computer Science Open House, to be held in the department’s atrium (first floor) on the first day of classes, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Meet with academic advisors to learn all about the programs we offer, both academic and extracurricular, as well as the Science Co-op program and volunteer opportunities. Learn about the Computer Science Student Society (CSSS), CS department special career programming and events, and student groups such as Maple Bacon Capture the Flag, Women in CS, Women in Data Science and nwPlus.
A separate orientation just for BCS students, will also take place on September 5 in DMP 110 from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm.
An entire week of activities for Grad Students
The Computer Science Graduate Student Association (CSGSA) has also arranged a whole slew of activities for incoming CS grad students, including a scavenger hunt, “CS Idol” show, social events, dinner at the beach, and even a hike. Tuesday, September 5 is the mandatory Orientation Day, featuring talks about the different programs available, groups and courses, a chance to hear from current grad students, and the opportunity to participate in fun group activities.
We also encourage you to explore the Wellbeing resources available to you within the department, by visiting https://www.cs.ubc.ca/health-wellness. It’s important to know where and how to reach out for help, should you need it during the year.
We are also very happy to be introducing two new courses on ethics in tech.
And if you have questions, just ask! We are all here to help make this an awesome year as we explore the dynamic world of computer science together.
See you on September 5!
